Wow..... What an exciting nights racing we had last night.14 people took to the start line at Sandycove to do battle over our toughest course yet. With a strong breeze in their backs the pack headed off down the coast to Bullock Harbour only to have to dig in on the second half of the lap to get back to Sandycove again, this was the first of 3 gruelling laps. It didn’t take long for the pack to get strung out along the coast creating a super spectacle for all around the 40ft area. Craig led from the front right from the start closely chased by Tim and Keith. Battles were taking place right through the field with nobody too far in front or behind another competitor. Jane and Katie did the ladies proud once again racing 2 laps of the course and paddled with incredible determination.
The finish of the men’s race could not have been closer with Craig just doing enough to sprint up the beach 2 sec ahead of Tim in afantastic time of 49 min. However following 2 official complaints, Craig wasdisqualified for not having basic racing safety equipment. Such a disappointmentafter racing at such a high level. There is a lesson in this for us all!! Keith repeated another strong performance finishing 3rd, followed by Ed who was inmuch better form this week. Dave Owens took 5th on his flat water debut, followed by Terry, Dave, Julian, Leon, Ross, Justin and Gavin. Well done Justin and Gavin, that sure was a challenging way to start the sport of SUP!
In the ladies race Jane and Katie put it up to their male colleagues. Jane had a very strong paddle to win, closely followed by a focused Katie.
Big well done to all paddlers, it was a fantastic sight to see you all do battle, the interest from land was massive!! We are all leading the SUP REVOLUTION! Bring it on....
Next weeks race is the middle distance event, 7 pm registration for 7.30 start at Sandycove. Here we will crown the Men’s and Ladies winner. We might even have a few fun races at the end, followed by a simple BBQ.
